Hi pkrg21,
So before I-485 becomes current, as long as I-140 gets approved, then we are okay to lose current job, either laid off or change job? I think I-140 approval doesn't take long, right? It's just I-485 takes forever?
I'm quite new to this process. My employer just filed Labor Certificate last week. I'm also a little worried if my employer goes bankruptcy some day.

I had similar situation few years back after my I-140 approved, but before applying I-485.
As long as your job title, description and place of work won't change, then you are ok. When you apply I485 or H1B ext, then your attorney must submit a document (successor of interest or similar document), telling that your role and place don't change.

Yes you would need a transit visa. In fact in Air India (not sure about other airlines) without transit visa you cannot even board the plane from US

There are two types of "scholarships": (i) taxable, and (ii) non-taxable. If the scholarship is non-taxable, which implies that it requires no work to "earn" it and it is not used for room-and-board and other living expenses, then you may be able to have that even while on H4.

NIW 140 approved last year. EB1a 140 RFE/485 pending. Can I file a new 485 for NIW? or do I have to withdraw the pending 485 before filing the new 485?

I efiled on April 7th and got FP notice on April 15th or so with appointment date of April 30th. Hope this helps.
